Excellence in academics, leadership, and service

UWinnipeg’s Golden Key Chapter was recognized with the Key Chapter Award for a sixth consecutive year

The UWinnipeg Golden Key Chapter was recognized with the Key Chapter Award for a sixth consecutive year.

For a sixth consecutive year, the longest streak for any Canadian chapter, The University of Winnipeg’s Golden Key Chapter (UWinnipeg-GK) has been awarded the highest recognition by the Golden Key International Honour Society — The Key Chapter Award. It is awarded annually to chapters that exceed the Society’s rigorous criteria grounded in the Golden Key pillars of academics, leadership, and service.

“The UWinnipeg-GK is very proud of our achievements, on- and off-campus. I encourage every student to connect with our membership to engage in volunteering, academic leadership, and community service. Congratulations to all UWinnipeg-GK members on their 6th consecutive Key Chapter Award. It is well deserved,” said Ruth Dickinson, Past President and current Vice-President, Alumni Relations.

Each fall, UWinnipeg-GK welcomes new academic achievers who meet the academic eligibility standard of performing in the top 15 per cent of their program of studies. This past year, many of these members demonstrated outstanding devotion to the chapter’s initiatives rooted in the intersecting pillars.

Achievements included raising more than $1,000 for its chapter-initiated UWinnipeg-GK scholarships by providing desserts and delivery throughout Winnipeg during the pandemic. Accommodating to current conditions, the Chapter still conducted a free workshop series open to all students that included resume writing, interviewing skills, mental health and wellness, and conflict resolution in the workplace. The Chapter also offered its well-established tutoring services with the UWinnipeg’s Faculty of Business and Economics, in conjunction with the Finance and Economics Students’ Association, and volunteered at Siloam Mission events.

Promoting academics, UWinnipeg-GK partnered with The Princeton Review and, again, offered free, campus-wide MCAT and LSAT seminars and mock tests to all UWinnipeg students. With year-round fundraising, the UWinnipeg-GK generously continued to fund its three scholarships: an In-Course, a Chapter, and a Convocation scholarship.

Annually, the Chapter recognizes individuals from the UWinnipeg and local community who exemplify a passion for learning and community service. At its New Member Recognition Event in January, two new honorary members were inducted into the Golden Key Society: Kevin Freedman, Faculty of Business and Economics, and Dr. Beata Bernacka, Faculty of Science. Additionally, the Chapter pays tribute to alumni who have made significant contributions to its success with its Distinguished Alumni Award. This year’s recipients were UWinnipeg-GK co-founder and faculty advisor since inception, Cathrine Froese Klassen, and long-time UWinnipeg-GK Executive Member, former President and current Vice President, Alumni Relations, Ruth Dickinson.

Students interested in UWinnipeg-GK are invited to any one of the repeated New Member Information Sessions being conducted between September 20 and September 23 at 5:30 pm via Zoom. Details are posted on social media.
