Looking forward to a safe and successful Winter Term

Exams are underway and the holiday break is almost here. As the Fall Term winds down and we look ahead to 2022, I want to thank you for making our gradual campus reopening both safe and successful. We greatly appreciate your patience and cooperation as we implemented our vaccination and mask mandates to enhance the safety of our campus community. These mandates will remain in effect for the 2022 Winter Term and we will continue to align our activities with the recommendations of public health officials.

Although recent information about the Omicron variant is raising concerns, we are confident in our actions to safeguard the wellbeing of faculty, staff, and students. While we recognize that many will feel anxious or nervous about coming back, we have taken several steps to resume on-campus operations in a safe and planned manner. We have increased student support services and mental health resources, made strategic investments in technology and infrastructure, and implemented numerous building ventilation systems enhancements. We have worked with Public Health Agency Canada and HVAC engineers to ensure we meet or exceed the requirements for ventilation and airflow in every University space.

Campus remains open only to vaccinated students, instructors, staff, and preapproved visitors. Building access will continue to be controlled at designated points. Entry will be granted only to those who have a green “campus access” sticker, which indicates proof of full vaccination.

If you are returning to campus in January for the first time and have yet to acquire your green sticker, please do so right away — as we expect a surge in demand when campus reopens in the new year, which may cause significant delays for those who need to get to class or work.

Between now and the holiday break, there are two ways you can present one-time proof of vaccination to obtain your sticker:

  • December 10 – 23: Visit Student Central (8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday). No appointment is required.
  • Saturday, December 18: From 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, a booth will be set up in Centennial Hall by the main security office.

Upon verification, a green “campus access” sticker will be affixed to the student ID card or employee ID card. Please follow link for instructions if you do not already have an ID card. New ID cards for faculty and staff can be picked up at the Human Resources office (Rice Centre, 7th Floor).

If you require further information related to our campus COVID-19 protocols, see our online FAQ, which is updated regularly as information evolves.

Though we are still dealing with challenges related to the pandemic, our collective resilience will see us through to better times ahead. I look forward to the next phase of our gradual campus reopening — approximately 70% of classes will be in person for the Winter Term — but in the meantime I wish you a restful holiday break, a happy holiday season, and all the best in 2022!
