The University of Winnipeg congratulates Helena Czaykowski, Isran Migane, and Alex Krykewich as valedictorians for the 128th Convocation ceremonies on Thursday, June 11 and Friday, June 12.
Helena Czaykowski, Bachelor of Arts (Hons)
Valedictorian Helena Czaykowski is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours.
She first came to UWinnipeg to specialize in creative writing, then decided to pursue the honours program to deepen her study of English literature.
Helena has many cherished memories of her honours seminar classes, where the small class sizes and highly specific topics allowed her to connect with classmates and the material.
She published work in the UWinnipeg juice journal and spent some time participating in the Creative Writing and Literature Club. She also had a short story published to the University of Liverpool’s Archaeology, Classics, and Egyptology blog.
Helena received the Roger and Kathleen Graham Scholarship in English, the Lillian Gibbons Scholarship in the Humanities, and the Victor Batzel Scholarship in the Humanities. She also received the Churchill Scholarship, Dr. Lloyd Siemens Memorial Scholarship in English, and the Harry S. Crowe Scholarship.
Helena feels very privileged to have had the time and resources to dig in to her studies at UWinnipeg, an experience she has enjoyed. She will take many memories with her as she moved on to her next adventure.
Helena hopes to eventually pursue a master’s degree either in English or in Creative Writing. While applying to schools outside of Manitoba and abroad, she will be searching for creative avenues in writing and publishing.

Isran Migane, Bachelor of Business Administration
Valedictorian Isran Migane is graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Economics and Finance.
From an early age, Isran was taught the value of thinking critically and staying curious. That, coupled with her interest in current events, politics, and the Canadian economy, led her to the Economics and Finance program at the University of Winnipeg.
Isran participated in the Co-operative Education Program during her third year at UWinnipeg, and later returned as a mentor in her fourth year. She was also selected to join the President’s Student Leadership Program, which gave her valuable opportunities to develop as a leader and connect with students from different universities in the province.
Isran served as the External Director of Finance for the Business Students’ Association, competed at JDC West as an HR delegate, and participated in the CFA Research Challenge.
Through participation in programs like the CFA Research Challenge, Isran was able to take concepts she learned in the classroom and apply them to real-world investment research. These experiences helped her develop technical skills and grow as a communicator, presenter, and teammate.
After graduation, Isran hopes to build a career at the intersection of public policy, finance, and emerging technologies. She is interested in exploring how artificial intelligence can shape policy development and decision-making. She hopes to work toward addressing complex challenges, while creating positive outcomes for communities.

Alex Krykewich, Bachelor of Physical and Health Education; Bachelor of Education
Valedictorian Alex Krykewich is graduating with a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education and Bachelor of Education.
Alex came to UWinnipeg with an interest in athletic therapy and a scholarship on the Wesmen Men’s Volleyball team. He started out in the field of Kinesiology then moved on to pursue an after-degree in Education.
Alex spent many hours playing volleyball, and even led his peers as team captain. But his proudest moment was his team’s historic win with their first-ever Canada West conference championship, and especially sharing that moment with other players and friends.
Alex’s leadership shines on and off the court. He was a six-time USPORTS Academic all Canadian, six-time Wesmen Athletics Academic Award recipient, and he received the Duckworth Award for sportsmanship and leadership.
He also received the Wesmen Athletics Community Service Award and was the men’s volleyball representative for the Wesmen equality, diversity, and inclusivity committee.
Alex hopes to get a professional volleyball contract in Europe. Otherwise, he plans to substitute teach and run volleyball camps in Winnipeg. He is extremely excited to use the skills he learned at UWinnipeg out in the community.
