UWinnipeg mourns the loss of Joan Ledoux

The University of Winnipeg community mourns the loss of former Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) cabinet minister Joan Ledoux.

Joan Ledoux served the MMF for more than 30 years as the Minister of Education and Associate Minister of Métis Employment and Training. She was recognized with the Queen’s Jubilee Award in 2023.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the Ledoux family, to the Manitoba Métis Federation, and to all who are mourning,” said Dr. Chantal Fiola, Associate Vice-President, Indigenous. “We remember Minister Ledoux with love and gratitude for her dedicated work encouraging lifelong education for all.”

In 2017, Ledoux was part of an MMF delegation that signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Winnipeg to bring $600,000 of funding to support Métis scholarship at UWinnipeg over the next decade. The agreement was to support post-doctoral fellowships and visiting scholars, as well as data analysis, through a grant of $60,000 annually and went into effect in 2018.

Campus flags will be lowered in honour of Joan Ledoux on Thursday, October 1.
