The University of Winnipeg received research funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) that totals over $350,000 that will enable five researchers in a variety of projects and disciplines. This funding comes via the Insight Grants and Insight Development Grants that help foster excellence and provide research opportunities for students and faculty.

“These awards will see important research begin over the next few months as faculty have had to adjust to these unprecedented times,” said Dr. Jino Distasio, Vice-President Research and Innovation. “Funding from SSHRC is critical and our faculty have had tremendous success over the last few years.”

UWinnipeg received two Insight Grants for projects led by Dr. Beverley Fehr and Dr. Erin Buckels in the Department of Psychology.

Fehr will use the funding to further her research project, A Prototype-Interaction Pattern Model of Love.

Buckels will use the funding toward her research project, Everyday Sadism: Measurement, Incentives, and Emotional Processing.

UWinnipeg also received three Insight Development Grants for Dr. Matthew Flisfeder, Dr. Yadira Chinique De Armas, and Dr. Eric Thrift.

Flisfeder, from the Department of Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications, is researching The Hysterical Sublime: A Critical Study of the Aesthetics, Rhetorics, and Ethics of New Materialist and Posthumanist Critical Theory.

Chinique De Armas, from the Department of Anthropology, is researching Weaning in times of colonialism: Isotopic reconstruction of breastfeeding and weaning practices in pre and post-contact indigenous population of Chorro de Maita in Cuba.

Thrift, also from the Department of Anthropology, is researching Untangling the ethics of “sustainable” cashmere.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports post-secondary-based research and research training in the humanities and social sciences.

The University of Winnipeg gratefully acknowledges the funding received from the Government of Canada Research Support Fund in aid of research infrastructure. The Research Support Fund (RSF) reinforces the research investment made by the Tri-Agencies each year by helping institutions ensure that their federally funded research projects are conducted in world-class facilities with the best equipment and administrative support available.
