UWinnipeg theatre students perform original works

UWinnipeg theatre students present Re-Vision: An Evening of Solo Performances, developed and performed by members of the fourth-year honours Devised Theatre class and directed by Professor Claire Borody. The show runs from November 17 – November 20, 2021.

Creating art that challenges established boundaries demands commitment, risk and the necessity of making difficult choices

Re-Vision, which is THFM’s season opener, is a series of brief performances that address the demands of our time, through the highly individual lens of each creator/performer.

The world has drastically changed in the last 18 months. That includes a global pandemic, racial tensions, the discovery of the remains of thousands of Indigenous children, ongoing climate-related disasters and more. It is a time of re-envisioning the kind of world we want.

From a foundation of concrete sources  – image, music, props, selected text and scored action – each performer has created a visual, aural and textual collage, influenced and inspired by such art-forms as dance, literature, film, music, the visual and plastic arts, as well as popular culture and journalism.

Creating art that challenges established boundaries demands commitment, risk and the necessity of making difficult choices,” says Borody.

Themes include: the notion that things are not as they appear to be; the collision between natural and manufactured landscapes; the examination of generational trauma and survival through fairy-tale worlds; rising above life’s barriers and external expectations; and the importance of determining self-identity amidst the tide of mass produced cultural information.

The performances are arranged as two separate live-streamed series featuring three twenty-minute solo performances followed by a talk-back session.

Series One performances run Wednesday, November 17 and Friday, November 19 at 7:30 PM.

Series Two performances run Thursday, November 18 and Saturday, November 20 at 7:30 PM

All performances are live-streamed and admission is free but reservations are recommended. Please visit the University of Winnipeg’s Department of Theatre and Film or call our 24-hour Reservation and Information Line at 204-786-9152.
