This summer 2,078 Winnipeg children created bear masks, played floor hockey, participated in sharing circles and conducted fun science experiments such as creating foamy “elephant toothpaste” among many other activities, all free of charge. The University of Winnipeg Adventure Kids Summer Camp is the largest inner city day camp offered in partnership with the Winnipeg Aboriginal Sports Achievement Centre and supported by generous donors MPI, Canada Summer Games, and Actua. It is a key part of UWinnipeg’s deep commitment to offer Community Learning programs on campus.
Over the past eight years, more than 8,000 children have attended the free day camp. Children from 75 schools across the Winnipeg, River-East Transcona, Seven Oaks and St.James Assiniboia School Divisions participate.
The 61 camp leaders are for the most part inner city youth, regarded as role models by the children who attend the programs. The youth employed by the camp are high school and university students who are gaining valuable work experience as well as being highly trained throughout the school year in preparation for summer employment.
The Adventure Kids Camp has children engaging in fun activities with a focus on Indigenous science and helps address summer learning loss. Participants attend free-of-charge, transportation is provided to the camp site, a nutrition program provides two healthy snacks and lunch to every child who also receive a t-shirt, re-usable water bottle, and canvas bag.
