Winnipeggers enjoy Jane’s Walk, 2008

WINNIPEG, MB – Transcona and Old St. Vital are new additions to Winnipeg’s version of Jane’s Walk, which takes place this coming weekend – Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3, 2009. People can also lace up their shoes and explore Fort Rouge-Riverview, West Broadway, Downtown, the West End, Wolseley, Seven Oaks, North Point Douglas and the Seine River area.

Jane’s Walks are held in cities and towns across North America to honour the legacy and ideas of urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs, who championed the interests of local residents and pedestrians over a car-centered approach to planning. Jane’s Walk helps knit people together into a strong and resourceful community, instilling belonging and encouraging civic leadership.

The guided tours are free and open to the public. Most are 90 minutes long.

“People are extraordinarily interested in learning more about where they live in a casual and fun way,” said Jino Distasio, Director of the Institute of Urban Studies at The University of Winnipeg and one of the organizers of Jane’s Walk. He will also lead a tour in his own neighbourhood called The Heart of Fort Rouge: Riverview, a Place with it all! “Last year this was new in Winnipeg and we were not sure what to expect but more than 500 people participated. We hope many more will get out in the fresh air and meet neighbours and enjoy a stroll this year.”
