3MT™ competition ‘Zooms’ along

The University of Winnipeg’s Faculty of Graduate Studies hosts its eighth annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT™) competition  on Thursday, March 4, 2021 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm via Zoom. Master’s Students from a variety of graduate programs will compete for a $1000 top prize and a $500 People’s Choice Award.

Each student will have the challenging task of explaining their complex thesis ideas with one static slide using simple language within just three minutes.

Graduate student Oumaima Hamila in the Applied Computer Science and Society program is one of the intrepid participants who will be explaining her thesis, Empowering Agriculture by Creating Labeled Datasets and AI-Driven Monitoring Systems in the 3MT™ competition.

“What I love about research is the ability to grow by learning and sharing knowledge with others,” said Hamila. “The 3MT™ presentation is a wonderful opportunity for me to reach more people and convey my passion about my work. I am looking forward to it!”

Meet this year’s brave 3MT™ participants!

The winner will then have an opportunity to compete at the virtual Western 3MT™ hosted by Athabasca University with a chance to move on the National 3MT™. The Western 3MT™ takes place on Thursday, May 13, 2021.

The 3MT™ is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland which challenges postgraduate degree students to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience within three minutes.

This year’s judges include Uzoma Asagwara (MLA for Union Station), Dr. Doug Goltz (UWinnipeg Dean of Science), and Amber McGuckin (Reporter, Global News).

Students from all programs are encouraged to attend, cheer on their peers, and vote for the People’s Choice Award. This free event is open to the public. To register as an audience member please visit 3MT™ Audience Registration.
