WINNIPEG, Sept. 29, 2014 – Grass Routes is an annual festival put on by the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA) and the Campus Sustainability Office at The University of Winnipeg. The theme for the 5th Grass Routes festival is “Intersections”, the crossroads between the streets, the art, the politics, the design, the communities and the bustle that make up Winnipeg.
“This year’s festival is focused on life in Winnipeg, and asking questions about why it is what it is, and what it could be,” says Andrée Forest, Outreach and Sustainability Officer, Campus Sustainability Office. “Grass Routes is a way to connect sustainability with the community through ideas, skills and art that are accessible to all. This festival will bring mayoral candidates, a virtual classroom experience with David Suzuki and an important Canadian street artist under one banner to explore the many ways of creating and living in this city.”
This year’s festival runs Oct. 6 to Oct. 11 at The University of Winnipeg. The festival is made-up of workshops, film screenings, tours, and panel discussions centred on this year’s theme, Intersections. All events are at UWinnipeg, mainly in the UWSA’s newest space on campus, the HIVE (located on the main floor of Lockhart Hall).
“It’s serendipitous timing for Roadsworth to be speaking at Grass Routes as this city works toward creating bike friendly streets,” says Ted Turner, the UWSA’s Outreach and Special Projects Coordinator “Roadsworth is a perfect fit for this year’s festival theme, his art is at the intersection of thought provoking and innovation. We couldn’t be more excited.”
The festival will host Montreal-based visual artist Roadsworth (Peter Gibson). Roadsworth is best known for his large-scale outdoor street paintings that playfully challenge notions of public space and social dialogue, often motivated by his desire for more bike friendly cities. He will speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the HIVE.

Grass Routes is an annual, week-long celebration of ideas, skills, art and creativity for a sustainable future. Through workshops, exhibits, and various lecture/dialogue events, the festival seeks to engage discussion about what sustainability means, what a sustainable world might look like, and how we might get there.
