5th International Conference on Mennonite Writing

WINNIPEG, MB – The Fifth International Conference on Mennonite/s Writing: Manitoba and Beyond takes place at The University of Winnipeg from October 1 – 4, 2009. The conference includes a prestigious list of participating authors and features scholarly papers on the work of individual Mennonite writers and on subjects related to Mennonite writing. All sessions will take place in The University of Winnipeg’s Convocation Hall, 515 Portage Ave, and are free and open to the public.

Manitoba Inscribed in Fiction & Poetry

The conference includes a bus tour on Sunday, October 4, 2009 that will visit sites in Winnipeg and southern Manitoba inscribed in fiction and poetry by major Canadian authors who will read from their work along the way. Authors include David Bergen, Di Brandt, Patrick Friesen, Sarah Klassen, Al Reimer, David Walter-Toews and Rudy Wiebe. All have roots in the Mennonite communities of Manitoba. The bus tour is $50 and includes a noon-hour Mennonite dinner and Faspa — Mennonite afternoon “tea”.

Plett Historical Foundation, the Writers Union of Canada, the League of Canadian Poets, and Canadian Mennonite University. Conference co-chairs are Royden Loewen, Chair in Mennonite Studies at The University of Winnipeg and Hildi Froese Tiessen, Professor of English at Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo.
