Janelle Gobin
WINNIPEG, MB – Growing up in the village of St. Claude, Manitoba, Janelle Gobin took an active interest in her rural community, participating in the 4H Club provincially and nationally for more than a decade. She also had an interest in politics and was St. Claude’s high school student council president, while maintaining strong grades. That commitment and hard work has earned Gobin the prestigious Walter Leatherdale Entrance Scholarship valued at $48,000 over four years.
“It was a crazy moment for me when I got the call from the University of Winnipeg,” says Gobin. “This makes such a huge difference in my life.”
The Walter Leatherdale Entrance Scholarship was established by Douglas Leatherdale, a 1957 graduate of United College*, in memory of his father. At $12,000 annually, it is among the most generous scholarship at The University of Winnipeg, covering tuition, books and allowances for living expenses for outstanding students from rural Manitoba, preferably from farming communities. The scholarship is renewable for an additional three years if the student maintains a cumulative grade point average of 3.55.
Gobin is now in her first year of studies at UWinnipeg and living in residence at McFeetors Hall: Great-West Life Student Residence. She is interested in both media and government, and is currently enrolled in Rhetoric, Writing and Communications with a leaning towards Political Science.
“I really love going to school here because of the atmosphere and smaller class sizes,” she says. “There were only 16 students in my graduating class so I am used to small. Here you can get to know people, and living in residence is also a good way to make new friends.”
The village of St. Claude is 20 minutes south of Portage La Prairie, with a population of approximately 600.
*United College became The University of Winnipeg in 1967.
