Tamika Reid is in her first year of Rhetoric, Writing and Communications at UWinnipeg. She graduated from Glenlawn Collegiate last spring. Reid earned the Marsha P. Hanen Entrance Scholarship for her academic achievement and her community involvement.
When Reid is not studying she volunteers as the youth ambassador for Winnipeg Harvest and gives talks at elementary schools; she is an Alumni Youth in Philanthropy member for the Winnipeg Foundation and works with the YMCA.
“I work with the YMCA child care division in French immersion with elementary kids ages 5-12,” said Reid. “I also work as an inclusion support worker with special needs youth. My job there is to socialize with the participants and create a sense of community in an after school program. We do fun activities like baking, and music day and it is a very humbling and rewarding experience for me.”
Reid also enjoys her urban campus experience, “I think UWinnipeg is fantastic,” said Reid. “I really like the atmosphere and the professors are great. They are invested in their students and take time out of their day to help you. And there are so many cultural and social opportunities on campus and I enjoy being downtown.”
As a high achiever, Reid also takes advantage of the tutoring services offered by UWinnipeg. “I want to thank Kevin Doyle, the coordinator of the tutoring center,” said Reid. “He has been very helpful and the tutors are great.”
The Department of Rhetoric, Writing and Communications offers peer-to-peer tutoring. For more information or to book an appointment please visit Rhetoric, Writing and Communications.
“Tamika Reid, this year’s recipient of the Marsha Hanen entrance scholarship comes with both the solid academic qualifications and the maturity, energy and insight that will help her to take advantage of the many opportunities that UWinnipeg offers,” shared Dr. Hanen. “She can take pride in her accomplishments, which I also applaud; and I am especially delighted by her involvement in the Youth in Philanthropy program of the Winnipeg Foundation, with which I feel a special kinship; I add my very best wishes for a rewarding and successful University career.”
The Marsha P. Hanen Entrance Scholarship is named after UWinnipeg’s fourth President and Vice-Chancellor who served from 1989 to 1999. In her role as president, Hanen was instrumental in the advancement of UWinnipeg’s growth and development strategy. During her tenure, notable accomplishments include: the passing of The University of Winnipeg Act, which had been highly sought after since the University’s creation in 1967, establishment of a full Bachelor of Education program, and the opening of both the Bulman Student Centre and the acclaimed Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall.
Hanen recently received the honour of President Emerita at The University of Winnipeg’s 100th Convocation for her exemplary work in academia, her consultative leadership style, and her inclusive nature that is recognized throughout the university community.
