W. John A Bulman Scholarship awarded to student excelling in every sphere

W. John A. Bulman Scholarhship recipient Jason Ying Yang

Jason Ying Yang says receiving the W. John Bulman Scholarship reinforces just how worthwhile all his efforts as a student are. A well-rounded and highly-motivated marketing major in his third year at UWinnipeg’s Faculty of Business and Economics, Yang is a leader who is heavily involved with student groups and community service. He has also managed to maintain high academic achievement while working.

In his first years as a student, Yang juggled his full-time studies with full-time work as a barista. He says this scholarship, along with another from Great West Life that includes a summer job, has allowed him to focus more on school. “It’s definitely a big relief for me,” he says. “I don’t have to work so much, and I’m spending more time on campus, doing things with student groups, so that’s a tremendous help.

He hasn’t given up working, though. His current employment, as a student assistant in the Faculty of Business and as a research assistant, will help further his career.

Yang came to the University of Winnipeg after immigrating to Canada, from Beijing, China. He says UWinnipeg was an ideal fit for him, especially because of small class sizes, and faculty who have stepped up to help him from the moment he first came to visit campus.

“I felt really welcome and the professors were really helpful,” he says. “Faculty have been really nice to me, professors, the Dean, and the Chair of Business and Administration, they’ve really helped me a lot.”

Yang says that support has been instrumental in helping him to reach his goals. For example, he recently helped organize a tutoring service for business students. Another exciting project Yang is spearheading at UWinnipeg is the Golden Futures initiative, a volunteer trip to South Africa for students which he learned of through his involvement with the Golden Key International Honour Society. Yang is also on the executive of BASA, the Business Administration Students’ Association.

Modest as he is hard-working, Yang says his friends have supported him and deserve to share the credit he’s receiving. “Everything I did last year, all the things I achieved on campus and outside campus, has a piece of my friend’s work in it. After I won the scholarship, I sent out an email to my friends, and my professors telling them the good news,” he says. “Overall, I’m really grateful to get this scholarship.”

The W. John A Bulman Scholarship was established in 1997 to honour Dr. John A. Bulman for his many years of service on the Board of Regents (1967-82) including two years as chair (1977-79), and 12 years as Chancellor (1984-96). It is awarded to an outstanding student or students in any undergraduate degree program. Jason Yang is one of two students who received $3,250 for this academic year.
