Dr. Linda Dietrick
The University of Winnipeg congratulates Dr. Linda Dietrick, Associate Professor of German Studies and Acting Chair of the Modern Languages and Literatures Department, on being awarded the prestigious Boeschenstein Medal, the highest honour of the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German (CAUTG).
The Medal has been awarded 11 times since it was commissioned in 1986 in preparation for the 25th anniversary of the founding of the CAUTG. It is given at the discretion of a selection committee appointed by the CAUTG board of directors to recognize an “exceptional contribution, in the humanitarian spirit of Hermann Boeschenstein, to the welfare of our Association and to the advancement of our discipline in Canada.”
In the presentation of the medal, Dietrick was commended by her colleagues for integrating feminism and critical theory into the “CAUTG mainstream”, and for being a “major force in shaping the CAUTG and Germanistik in Canada.” She was president of the association from 1996 to 1998.
Dr. Linda Dietrick joined The University of Winnipeg in 1989, after serving as a lecturer at the University of Manitoba and an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. She has taught many different language and literature courses, including Introductory and Intermediate German, Studies in German Culture, and Literature in Translation: Faust, or Dealing with the Devil. She has served on the editorial board of Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies, and in addition to the CAUTG, she is also a member of the Canadian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, the International Herder Society, the North American Society for Studies in Romanticism and the Manitoba Teachers of German. Dietrick has authored one book, co-edited a scholarly edition, and co-edited two article collections, most recently a forthcoming volume entitled Women’s Creativity around 1800. She has also published numerous peer-reviewed articles or book chapters and presented at 20 conferences and symposiums.
Herman Boeschenstein w
as a well admired Swiss-born professor who immigrated to Canada and served as Head of the Department of German at the University of Toronto up until his retirement in 1967. During his accomplished career, he authored 9 books and numerous scholarly articles. He is also noted for his service in the War Prisoners Aid group of the YMCA during the Second World War, for working with German prisoners of war throughout Canada
