UWinnipeg Professor Per Brask has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2016 Griffin Poetry Prize for the translation of the book Frayed Opus for Strings & Wind Instruments. Brask and his colleague Patrick Friesen translated the book of poetry by Ulrikka S. Gernes from Danish. The winner will be announced on Thursday, June 2 in Toronto.
“Ulrikka S. Gernes’s collection is a revelation in the original Danish,” expressed Brask. “Patrick and I were honoured and delighted to translate it into Canadian English. We tried our best to keep its song humming.”
A faculty member in the Department of Theatre and Film, Brask has taught at UWinnipeg since 1982. He has published poetry, short stories, drama, translations, interviews, and essays in a wide variety of journals and books. This is the fifth volume of poetry he has co-translated with Friesen, a poet, essayist, playwright, and translator living in Victoria, BC.
Each year, the Griffin Trust For Excellence In Poetry presents an anthology of poems selected from the shortlisted books, published by House of Anansi Press. Royalties from The Griffin Poetry Prize Anthology are donated to UNESCO’s World Poetry Day.
