WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg congratulates all of the 2013 inductees into the Order of Manitoba. Among the 13 inductees who received the province’s highest honour yesterday, six individuals have ties to UWinnipeg: Dr. David Chartrand (LLD ‘12), Olga Fuga (Collegiate ’33), Dr. George Nicholas Heshka (DLE ‘13), Dr. H. Sanford Riley CM (LLD ‘09), Diane Redsky (Advisory Committee member of UWinnipeg’s Global College), Dr. Allan Ronald (DSC ’06) and The Honourable Richard J. Scott (Collegiate ‘55).
Four of the inductees are recipients of UWinnipeg Honorary Doctorates for their commitment to education, community and advocacy for social justice. Chartrand was honoured in 2012 for his 22 years of leadership and governance within the Metis nation; Heshka was honoured this past spring for his visionary quarter-century of leadership as principal of Sisler High School; Riley in 2009 was recognized for his service with great distinction to the University as its sixth Chancellor and for his contributions to the UWinnipeg community; and in 2006 Ronald, an eminent Manitoban, was honoured for his long and distinguished career in medicine and public health — in particular for his pioneering AIDS research in Africa.
“The Order of Manitoba is the province’s highest honour and we are privileged to have an association with six of the inductees,” said UWinnipeg President and Vice Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy. “Each of these visionary individuals has greatly contributed to the fabric of our society by sharing their knowledge and commitment, to the betterment of our communities and province.”
Established in 1999, the Order is the highest honour in the Province of Manitoba. It recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field of endeavour, benefiting in an outstanding manner the social, cultural or economic well being of Manitoba and its residents.
