Uncover the power of statistics! Data is everywhere and its abundance can be overwhelming in our lives. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics presents a lecture entitled, How Making Sense of Data is the New Gold Rush! presented by Dr. Christian Léger (Université de Montréal) on Monday, March 26, at 12:30 pm in Room 1L11. This lecture is free and open to the public.
Statistics is the science and the art of learning from data. From medical studies to research experiments, from satellites continuously orbiting the globe to ubiquitous social network sites like Facebook or LinkedIn, data is collected everywhere and all the time.
This lecture will help make sense of the data through examples. Léger will give an overview of the importance of statistics and how statistics plays a major role in diverse areas and understand why statistician/data scientists are in high demand and get paid ‘the big bucks.’
Léger holds a BSc in mathematics from McGill University and a PhD in statistics from Stanford University. Since 1988, he has taught at Université de Montréal and currently as a professor of statistics. His research is in resampling methods, but he is also interested in the application of statistics to various areas. He also serves as consultant in different projects, notably in legal litigation concerning taxes. He has held numerous leadership positions in national and international statistical organizations, notably as President of the Statistical Society of Canada and Interim Director of the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM). He is the 2018 Program Chair of the Joint Statistical Meetings, the largest yearly meeting of statisticians. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.
