Everyone is welcome to attend Gallery 1C03’s memorial display and artwork talk taking place Monday, December 3 at The University of Winnipeg’s Riddell Hall to commemorate National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
The UWSA’s Women-Trans Spectrum Centre (WTSC) and Gallery 1C03 are partnering to present this memorial event. From 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., there will be a display in front of Riddell Hall honouring the 14 women who lost their lives. At 11:00 a.m., Gallery 1C03 Curatorial Intern Breanna Waterman will give a brief talk about Lin Gibson’s installation Murdered by Misogyny: Forever.
On December 6, 1989, 14 women were killed at École Polytechnique in Montreal in a brutal act of misogyny. Soon after, artist, writer, and activist Lin Gibson created a multi-site installation of 14 plaques that were displayed across Winnipeg, each prominently stating the name of one of the women killed, to memorialize these women and draw attention to gender-based violence. One of the 14 plaques, honouring Nathalie Croteau, was purchased jointly by The University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA) and UWinnipeg. This plaque has been displayed on the west wall of Gallery 1C03 since 1990.
