The numbers are in and Science Rendezvous Winnipeg keeps getting bigger. Approximately 5,000 attendees, and over 700 volunteers, attended the May 2019 festival co-hosted by The University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba. The event reached 4,000 participants in 2018.
UWinnipeg chemistry professor, Dr. Tabitha Wood appeared on CTV, along with event organizer Kyla Smith sharing some of the fun activities participants experienced at this year’s Science Rendezvous festival.
There were over 50 hands-on activities for the whole family, from magicians revealing the science in card tricks to chemists offering potion classes. Some of these activities were showcased on the main stage. UWinnipeg chemistry student Kyle Saunders, along with U of M chemistry students, Dennis Drewnik and Kartik Sachar, wowed the crowd with a demonstration of “hands of fire,” which was captured on video by Virgin Radio:
Saunders also appeared on Global news, along with U of M event organizer, Seema Goel, to share his excitement for the festival. They were able to explain that, though the “hands of fire” might look like a magic trick, in fact it’s science:
The Winnipeg event is part of a national celebration of science and discovery with over 300 events across 30 cities, a partner of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Science Odyssey, May 4 – 19, 2019.
The next Science Rendezvous Winnipeg festival will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2020.
