The University of Winnipeg, located on Treaty 1 land in the heart of the Métis nation, is proud to honour National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21, 2019.

In celebration, UWinnipeg hosted a bannock breakfast on campus that welcomed students, faculty, staff, and community members. The brief program included performances by the Spence Tradition (square dancers and fiddler).

UWinnipeg acknowledges and honours the culture, achievements, and significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada. UWinnipeg is committed to implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, especially those that focus on education.

UWinnipeg is fortunate to have leading Indigenous academics like award-winning researcher Dr. Lorena Fontaine as our Indigenous Academic Lead, who is overseeing UWinnipeg’s Indigenous Course Requirement (ICR). UWinnipeg is also proud of the three new Indigenous Canada Research Chairs: Dr. Jaime Cidro, Dr. Mary Jane McCallum, and Dr. Julie Nagam. UWinnipeg is privileged to have talented Indigenous leaders and academics who share a deep commitment to community outreach and inclusion, and they bring with them tremendous knowledge and insight for the journey of reconciliation.
