Dancers to add energy at Wesmen games and school events
WINNIPEG, MB – Love to hip hop, moon walk, tap and flip? The University of Winnipeg is launching the Wesmen Dance Team with auditions slated for September 30, 2012.
The Wesmen Dance Team will be a professional, competitive team providing students with high quality dance training and innovative artistic performances. It is geared towards male and female dancers who take their training seriously, value sportsmanship, and are passionate about dance. The dance team is a great opportunity for students who wish to continue their dance training beyond the studio.
The Wesmen Dance Team will perform at school and sports events and compete at a national level against other university teams. There are more Wesmen games than ever. Since 2007, the Wesmen family has grown from four teams to 14 teams, adding soccer, baseball and wrestling teams to the already successful basketball and volleyball programs.
“Wesmen Athletics has always taken pride in the high level of first class entertainment that it provides at a Wesmen event. It is crucial that our students and fans experience a great atmosphere and a level ofmexcitement that will keep them wanting to come back time and time again,” said Doran Reid, Director of Athletics. ”A good dance team is an integral part of that atmosphere, not only in the performances they give but the commitment they make to the overall goals. I was very pleased when students came to us with the idea to create such a high level team. I look forward to considering them as our 15th team. They will be good ambassadors for our programs and for the University.”
The Wesmen Dance Team will consist of 24 dancers who will be expected to devote a minimum three hours weekly to the team. Auditions will be held once a year with the first audition on Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in The University of Winnipeg – Auxiliary Gym. Pre-registration is required. Check here for complete audition details.
Dancers must be current full or part time UWinnipeg students with valid student IDs. There is no membership fee. All funding comes from fundraisers and the Wesmen. Dancers’ expenses will be covered for uniforms, travel (to both local and national performances/competitions), registration fees (for competitions) and studio rentals.
The first Wesmen Dance Team is expected to be performance-ready by the end of October.
