New CEO Appointed for University of Winnipeg Foundation

UWinnipeg alumnus Brian Daly returns home to lead Foundation

BrianDalyWINNIPEG, MB – Dr. H. Sanford Riley, Chair of The University of Winnipeg Foundation, and Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, UWinnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor, are pleased to announce the appointment of Brian Daly as the new Chief Executive Officer of The University of Winnipeg Foundation effective November 15, 2011.

A University of Winnipeg alumnus, Brian brings more than 20 years of fundraising and development experience in both the university and non-profit sectors to this position. Presently Director of Fundraising at the University of Victoria, and prior to that as Director of Campus Based Fundraising, he has overseen the transformation of the major gifts culture at UVic, hiring and promoting staff to build a planned and annual giving team, and integrating these units to build a sustainable major gift fundraising operation. During his five years there, he has been responsible for raising between $18 and $31 million annually.

Prior to moving to Victoria in 2006, Brian was Director of Development for a number of charitable organizations in Manitoba including the Canadian Diabetes Association, The Salvation Army and the Children’s Hospital Research Foundation, as well as Capital Campaign Manager for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

A Class of ’86 graduate, Brian began his career as The University of Winnipeg’s Director of Alumni and Advancement, and as a student, served as vice-president of The University of Winnipeg Students’ Association, photography editor for The Uniter and as a member of the Board of Regents. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from UWinnipeg, and a Masters of Business Administration from The University of Toronto.

Susan A. Thompson, Founding President and CEO of the Foundation since 2003, finished her time at the Foundation on September 30. Susan played an integral role in establishing the Foundation as the University’s fundraising body and in the launch and successful completion of the “A World of Opportunity” Capital Campaign, which raised a grand total of $135 million.

“I would like to extend my deep appreciation to Susan for her dedicated service to the University and the Foundation, and in particular for her hard work and leadership in successfully completing the capital campaign,” said Riley. “I would also like to welcome Brian back to his alma mater and joining our team as we look forward to the next generation of leadership at the Foundation.”

With this transition, the Foundation’s primary focus will be to provide high-quality donor stewardship, maintaining relationships with over 7600 existing donors, and to build the endowment fund to an initial target of $50 million through focused annual, major gift and planned giving efforts. The University’s External Affairs Department, under the direction of Dan Hurley, Associate Vice-President (External Affairs), will now take on lead and major gift fundraising for special project and faculty/department-based solicitations, and institutional priorities.

“With the Capital Campaign successfully completed, the University and Foundation will now move on to the next phase of our fundraising and development goals,” said Axworthy. “I am looking forward to working together with Brian and the Foundation on achieving its objectives, while also developing an integrated annual fund and alumni engagement strategy, and preparing for a new Family Campaign with faculty and staff to be launched in 2012.”

Effective September 30, Teresa Murray serves as acting CEO until Brian’s arrival. For any matters regarding the Foundation during this period, Teresa may be reached at 786-9993 or at t.murray@uwinnipeg.ca.
