WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg is embracing emerging technologies to provide today’s students with a contemporary library experience that blends the rich tradition of print-based knowledge with state-of-the art discovery software.
As students return to school this September, they will find a `first of its-kind in Manitoba’ modular Learning Commons in the library, located on the 4th floor, Centennial Hall, offering 34 new retractable computer stations, 3 learning pods equipped with discovery software, 2 new interactive, technologically-equipped study and seminar rooms for group projects, and professional library staff available to train and assist them with their technical needs.
The new Learning Commons is also consistent with UWinnipeg’s deep commitment to remove barriers so that all students, regardless of socio-economic background, have access to the technological tools they need to succeed.
“A contemporary library must not only connect with students and faculty by providing and fostering access to traditional resources, but through activities of its staff, become a partner in the learning enterprise,” said Jane Duffy, Dean of the Library. “It is exciting to work with a team of creative colleagues to design the kind of space that meets the emerging digital needs on campus and helps people attain their research and academic goals.”
The cost of the project was $120,000.
Ahead for the library this year: Installing 25 more computer stations in the area framed by picture windows on the southeast corner of the 5th floor; transforming mezzanine areas into research pods with video-linking technology to allow researchers on campus to connect with those in the field; and creating a quiet mezzanine study area for students.
