WINNIPEG, MB – University of Winnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, in conjunction with TELUS Vice-President Michael Sangster, today announced a new partnership and creation of two new important funds.
Special guest Gen. (ret.) Rick Hillier was in attendance as Sangster announced creation of a $15,000 TELUS Military Families Scholarship Fund to support military members and their families. The scholarship will be awarded each May to assist a select number of sons and daughters of Canadian Forces personnel to attend The University of Winnipeg.
“In making this first contribution toward the creation of a scholarship fund in honour of our brave Canadian soldiers, TELUS renews our commitment to always give back to the communities we serve,” said Sangster, who originally hails from Winnipeg. “We welcome and encourage all Manitobans to give where they live and join with us in building upon this important fund.”

”TELUS is as committed to the military community in Manitoba as they have shown with other military communities across Canada,” said Hillier. “Establishing a scholarship specifically for students of military families right here in Manitoba will go a long way to helping those who sacrifice so much for our country, and I’m proud to be associated with a company such as TELUS that continually takes a leadership role in corporate philanthropy.”
New Technology Fund
In addition, TELUS announced creation of a $150,000 TELUS Technology Fund that will enable
UWinnipeg to invest in leading technology from TELUS to support the University’s operation. The fund will grow as the relationship between UWinnipeg and TELUS grows, and will significantly enhance UWinnipeg’s Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) infrastructure.
“This partnership builds important new bridges between UWinnipeg and TELUS,” said Axworthy. “Through TELUS’ leading position on the national and international stage, we’ll gain important insight into cutting-edge technology, and how industry is leveraging the rapid advances in technology and communications to be effective and efficient.In turn, TELUS will have access to the University’s established research capabilities and emerging expertise in collaborative technologies founded on cutting-edge technology donated to UWinnipeg earlier this year by Cisco Systems, Inc.”
TELUS actively supports education and the use of technology, which makes the University of Winnipeg a natural partner. TELUS admires The University of Winnipeg’s vision, demonstrated by the significant transformational role it has played in downtown Winnipeg, with Aboriginal youth and its mission to connect world-class experts, students, and staff through the use of technology.
Axworthy also announced plans to further enhance access to education at The University of Winnipeg for military personnel. This would include recognizing prior service and previous training as credit towards a bachelor’s degree, as well as enhanced counseling and career services. UWinnipeg’s Faculty of Business and Economics already had a partnership with the Canadian Air Force for pilots by offering a major in Aviation Management studies.
