WINNIPEG, MB – Computer hackers are continually developing new ways to gain access to networks. Business and industry demand secure networks and require employees with the skills to help protect them. The new Network Security Diploma program, beginning September 7, 2010, provides graduates with IT security skills to help mitigate these threats. The program is open to both post-secondary students and those already working in the IT field.
The Network Security Diploma program is jointly offered through The University of Winnipeg Division of Continuing Education (DCE) and Winnipeg Technical College (WTC). This diploma program provides a balanced training approach between hands-on practical experience and the theoretical/conceptual nature of IT security. Graduates will have an in-depth knowledge of various protocols, network standards, designs and security solutions.
Best of both worlds
Brent Kurz, Director Communications and Planning, WTC, says that the program is unique as it combines the strengths of a technical college and university. “WTC is a Regional CISCO Academy and provides excellent job skills training. The University of Winnipeg is a well known, accredited university providing relevant courses such as cryptography and project management,” said Kurz. “This partnership between WTC and UWinnipeg offers students the best of both worlds.”
Students will have access to state of the art CISCO Labs and an integrated hands-on approach to learning. While working towards their diploma, students obtain industry certifications such as CISCO CCNA, Microsoft MCITP, CISCO Security, CISCO Voice over IP and Ethical Hacking.
The program course times are flexible, allowing students to continue their education while working at the same time.
“Certification in this program builds on students’ current technology strengths and provides for transfer of credits,” said Cathy Domke, Program Coordinator, University of Winnipeg. “This diploma opens doors for students in the workplace and there are many options for transferring of credits and credentials.”
Employers require IT security skills in occupations such as Network Security Specialist, Network Administrator, Network Technician and Internet Server Administrator.
The Network Security Diploma program starts September 7, 2010. However there are flexible, multiple intakes throughout the school year. Registrations are accepted at both UWinnipeg and WTC. For information, visit: dce.UWinnipegCourses.ca or call (UWinnipeg) 204-982-1156 or (WTC) 204-989-6500
