WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg will be the best place to get your basketball game on this summer, as the University plays host to the Summer in the City Street Festival & Basketball Tournament, June 25, 26 and 27. The event is a fundraiser in support of the Inner City Junior Wesmen program.
Taking place outside on Spence Street and indoors at the Duckworth Centre, the Summer in the City event features entertainment, a skills competition and, of course, a top-notch three-on-three basketball tournament for participants of all ages.
“This event is a fun festival in the downtown area and not just basketball in a gym,” said Bob Axworthy, Inner City Junior Wesmen coach and tournament organizer. “Tournaments like this and the Heart of the City event we held earlier this year are key to developing meaningful programs for inner-city kids. We invite everyone to come out, have some fun and support a worthwhile program at the same time.”
The action gets underway on Friday, June 25 at 6:00 pm with a survivor skills basketball competition on Spence Street that is open to all competitors. The skill challenges include two minutes of rapid shooting, two minutes of speed layups, free-throw shooting and a dribble maze. The night’s activities also include entertainment and a barbeque. Prizes will be awarded for the skills competition.
The three-on-three competition begins Saturday, June 26 at 9:00 am with games for boys and girls in the 12-17 year-old categories as well as an 18-and-older section. The three-on-three event continues Sunday, June 27 for boys and girls in the 7-11 year-old categories.
