WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg is screening an important, award-winning film called Dukot (Abduct) on Friday, May 14 and Saturday, May 15 which exposes human rights abuses in the Philippines. The producer, screenwriter as well as leading actor will be travelling from the Philippines to promote the film and will be available for question and answer sessions with the Winnipeg audience following the screenings.

This is a fundraising event to bring awareness of the political killings in the Philippines, hosted by The University of Winnipeg Global College, BAYAN Canada, Damayan Manitoba Inc. and Aksyon ng Ating Kabataan (ANAK) Inc.
A majority of the proceeds will go to support Karapatan, an NGO comprised of Filipino lawyers who offer paralegal training to the poor and investigate political crimes.
“Prolific writer Bonifacio Ilagan and audacious filmmaker Joel Lamangan are two committed political artists in our midst,” writes Boy Villasanta, Manila film reviewer. “Dukot is Lamangan’s and Ilagan’s enthusiastic but grim foray into the phenomenon of “desaparacidos” (literally, the disappeared). Both Ilagan and Lamangan are political activists who genuinely fight for freedom and democracy. Because of their personal experiences in the underground movement, they were able to chronicle real and horrifying events onscreen.”
