WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg’s 2010 Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence David Bergen reads from his novel in-progress, The Matter with Morris, on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 12:30 pm in Convocation Hall. The reading is free and open to the public.
Bergen’s name resonates internationally. He has won the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award (three times), the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction and the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award. He graduated from The University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor of Education degree (1985), and in 2007, Bergen received an Honorary Doctorate from The University of Winnipeg.

Bergen is a seasoned mentor. He spent 15 years in the public school system teaching high school English and Creative Writing, and has been an instructor at the Banff School of Writing, the Humber School of Writing and The University of Winnipeg.
As Writer-in-Residence, Bergen has an office in the English Department (Room 2M69 – Second Floor, Manitoba Hall) at the University. Writers from the university and members of the public are encouraged to meet with Bergen from January 4 until April 30, 2010 for private consultations. Carol Shields was known for cultivating emerging writers, mentoring students and members of the writing community. The Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence Program, which was established in 2005, continues this legacy. Bergen’s residency has been made possible by the Carol Shields family and the Canada Council for the Arts.
