Dozens Of Youth Gather This Weekend For First "Summer In The City" Street Festival & Basketball Tournament On Spence Street

WINNIPEG, MB – Journalists are invited to attend The University of Winnipeg and the Inner-City Jr.Wesmen inaugural “Summer In The City” Street Festival and Basketball Tournament taking place this weekend, Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 on Spence Street in front of the UWinnipeg’s Duckworth Centre.

Dozens of youth from Grade 7 to 12 from the inner-city and suburban Winnipeg schools will shoot hoops in a skills competition that begins Friday at 6:00 PM and continues all day Saturday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. There will also be concessions, barbeques and music, including a performance by the Winnipeg band Maximum Sixty.

“The street tournament demonstrates the on-going commitment by The University of Winnipeg to nurture the talents of inner-city youth,” said organizer, Bob Axworthy. “Many of these teenagers have the ability to become elite athletes, and just need to opportunity to hone their skills in a challenging and supportive place. That’s what we are providing through the Jr. Wesmen Youth Clubs.”
