WINNIPEG, MB – The ever-popular Wesmen Summer Sports Camps are proving to be a hit once again, as spaces are filling quickly.
The University of Winnipeg Summer Sport Camps have been operating for more than 40 years. A variety of basketball, volleyball and multi-sport camps for children and youths ranging from Grades 1-12 are offered. The camps provide top-notch instruction by members of the Wesmen coaching staff, high-school coaches in Manitoba, alumni as well as present-day elite Wesmen student-athletes.
In the past few years, The University of Winnipeg has focused more attention to inner-city children that may not have a chance, or be able to, afford the experience of a Wesmen Summer Camp. Last summer a group of 40 enthusiastic children from IRCOM (Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba) were offered spots in a week-long basketball-volleyball camp session. The University also partnered with the Spence Neighborhood Association and other inner-city groups to provide special after-hours camp sessions.
“I am excited about how our camps are growing and adapting to need,” said University of Winnipeg Athletic Director Doran Reid. “We have been working with inner-city groups, have added special camps and opened up spots in our regular camps for those that cannot afford to participate. Having our athletes and instructors work with the youth of our surrounding community has been a benefit to everyone.”
“The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Sport Camps are the total package and are second to none,” said Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Diane Scott. “The campers get the total experience: learning new skills, improving on their game, making new friends and having a great week of camp! Each summer is special, lots of new faces, tons of repeat campers… it’s awesome.”
For many of the campers, they enjoy the experience of coming to the University and playing on the same court as the Winnipeg Wesmen Basketball and Volleyball teams.
“I think the camps give many young people their first contact with The University of Winnipeg,” said Men’s Basketball Head Coach Dave Crook. “I think it is a great opportunity for kids to discover our campus, meet our athletes and form a first bond with the school.”
The 2009 Wesmen Summer Sports Camps will take place in July and August. Space is still available for week-long basketball, volleyball and multi-sport sessions. To register online or for more information, please visit www.wesmen.ca or call (204) 786-9418.
