The University of Winnipeg continues to stand alongside calls for an end to Russia’s escalating war against Ukraine. Our thoughts are with Ukrainian people and their family members in Winnipeg and beyond.
We are in direct contact with current students who are from Ukraine to ensure they are fully supported.
In times like these, we know it is important that students are able to access immediate counselling services, as well as additional supports and resources. Personal counselling and health and wellness resources are available to any student currently registered at UWinnipeg.
UWinnipeg’s Emergency Student Relief fund is available for current students who are experiencing financial need. Students can apply for this through Awards and Financial Aid.
UWinnipeg’s faculty and staff are committed to supporting our students. If you are a student experiencing difficulty with course requirements, we encourage you to reach out to an advisor in Student Services or talk to your instructors.
UWinnipeg will continue to stand with Ukraine
In the weeks since this war began, our UWinnipeg community has continued to rally in solidarity with Ukraine.
We are waiving application fees for international students coming from Ukraine, which is an Admissions practice we have in place to support students applying from all war-affected areas.
We are also working with the provincial and federal governments. Our student immigration advisors are able to advise current and future students regarding the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) temporary residence pathway.
The University is honouring the legacy of longtime champion for the University Bill Balan by matching contributions to the Vasyl (Bill) Balan International Students from Ukraine Bursary up to a total contribution of $25,000. This bursary creates opportunities for Ukrainian students studying at The University of Winnipeg.
The University of Winnipeg Ukrainian Students’ Association’s ribbon drive continues to raise awareness and funds to support vital humanitarian efforts. The student group generously provided the University with a Ukrainian flag, which was raised on campus in early March to show support for Ukraine, its people, friends, and allies. The blue and yellow colours have been used on Ukraine’s national flag since 1848. The blue represents the sky, streams, and mountains of Ukraine, while the yellow symbolizes the golden wheat fields and the richness of earth.
As the situation unfolds, we know there is power in community. We will continue to monitor and respond to this situation, standing together in support of Ukraine’s fight for independence.
