Last month, The University of Winnipeg Research Office partnered with Bioscience Association Manitoba (BAM) to celebrate the innovative research happening at UWinnipeg at the Science in the City networking event.
As a part of Global Biotech Week, the event bought key industry and government stakeholders together to view the research happening at UWinnipeg in the natural sciences, engineering, and health sectors.
The event space, filled with graduate students’ research posters and booths showcasing exciting developments in Biotech in Manitoba, provided a thought-provoking space for collaboration between attendees.
“Seeing such an enthusiastic turnout was very rewarding,” said Rachel Keijzer, Program Officer, Natural Sciences Research and organizer of the event. “People were excited to connect.”
Participants also had the opportunity to tour UWinnipeg’s state-of-the-art research facilities and talk with researchers about their latest work on the conservation of insect-eating bats, blood screening tests designed to detect colorectal cancer, how breast milk shapes an offspring’s health and projections of climate change on the Canadian Prairies.
The Honourable Cliff Cullen, Deputy Premier and Minister of Economic Development, Investment and Trade, presented BAM with a proclamation to recognize September 26 to October 2, 2022, as Manitoba Biotechnology Week.
“The Proclamation demonstrates that the Manitoba Government supports this growing bioscience industry, its students, researchers, teachers, innovators, and supporters, and sees opportunities for success in Manitoba,” said Judi Bahl, Director of Business Development for BAM.
It is BAM’s hope that the event will not only benefit industry professionals, but also inspire students to pursue careers in Manitoba’s thriving bioscience sector.
“For students, we want to encourage them to continue career paths in biotech,” said Bahl. “We hope that BAM is recognized as a supportive industry association, key partner, and connector in bringing stakeholders together to promote and celebrate bioscience and all that it brings to Manitoba.”
