The Manitoba Government has delivered its 2023/24 budget and Manitoba’s post-secondary education system funding envelop will be increased by 12 percent. This is welcome news for the entire sector and for the University of Winnipeg.
Our 2023/24 allocation is $77,581,500 plus $1.2 million for deferred maintenance. This represents a 20.2 percent increase in our operating budget. To maintain affordable tuition rates, post-secondary institutions were asked to hold tuition increases to 2.75 percent, which is less than the initial 3.75 percent budget planning parameter.
This enhanced level of funding will allow us to address a reduction in expected tuition revenue and increased costs associated with the recent ratification of several collective agreements, salary increases associated with collective agreements to be negotiated soon, and general and inflationary pressures. We remain committed to student success and to supporting academic and research excellence, Indigenous initiatives, and other key priorities that make the University of Winnipeg the outstanding, student-centred institution that it is.
We are extremely grateful to the Province of Manitoba for recognizing the pressing need to align the operating grant it provides to the University of Winnipeg with its size and scope. We remain committed to continuing discussions with our provincial partners, and working towards achieving funding equity with our peer institutions.
