Can you explain complex research in three minutes? That’s what Faculty of Graduate Studies students will do during The University of Winnipeg’s Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition on Friday, March 7.
What is the Three-Minute Thesis competition?
In this competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia, graduate students share their research and why it’s significant to a room of non-experts in three minutes or less.
Prizes include $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for the People’s Choice award winner. The first-place winner also receives an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2025 Western Regional competition in Victoria, BC.
What kind of research is eligible?
UWinnipeg students are encouraged to present content from their term papers, thesis proposals, practicum reports, and even their master’s theses, at the competition.
“We’re thrilled to invite students from every graduate program to join this year’s 3MT,” said Dr. Kyle Devine, Dean of Graduate Studies. “The competition is a fun and friendly way to hear about UWinnipeg’s latest exciting research. It’s also a great way to connect with others and to practice explaining your work in engaging ways that speak to specialists and non-specialists alike. This is great for conferences and funding proposals. It is a lifelong skill that will serve you well in any career. All graduate students are eligible, whether you are enrolled in a program based on a thesis, a practicum, or courses. We are also offering training sessions to help participants polish their presentations and PowerPoint slides.”
How to register
Registration is open now until Friday, January 31 at 11:59 p.m. Students need to prepare a title and 150-word abstract for their presentation and submit their details online.
