The University of Winnipeg is pleased to announce Michelle Pereira as the new Chair of its Board of Regents. Appointed to the Board in 2019, Pereira brings a wealth of leadership experience in governance, communications, and non-profit management to the role.
Pereira currently serves as Director of Marketing and Communications for Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba. Previously, she was Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Marketing, Communications & Philanthropy at Habitat for Humanity Manitoba.
Pereira began her two-year term on July 1, succeeding Bruce Miller, whose term concluded June 30. “I want to express my deep gratitude to Bruce,” said Pereira. “His leadership has been impactful not only for the University but for the broader community, and his mentorship to me personally has been invaluable. His commitment to inclusive governance, reconciliation, and institutional integrity has left a strong foundation, and I’m honoured to build upon that work.”
As Chair, Pereira looks forward to championing long-term financial stability and strong collaboration with the Province. She is inspired by the direction set out in the University’s new strategic plan, which will officially launch this fall.
“The clarity of vision in the new strategic plan sets an ambitious but achievable course for the University’s future,” she said. “I’m excited by the commitment to embedding Truth and Reconciliation and EDI principles into every one of the plan’s five pillars—not just as standalone initiatives, but as integral to all decision-making.”
To Pereira, a well-run board is important for organizational success. “Effective governance directly supports student success, research impact, and community engagement,” she said. “The Board plays a critical role in guiding the University’s mission.” Pereira recently completed the Rotman ICD Board Dynamics course, which focuses on best practices in governance for the not-for-profit sector. In addition to serving on the UWinnipeg Board of Regents, she will also be contributing her expertise as a member of the University of Winnipeg Foundation Board of Directors.
Looking ahead, Pereira sees much to be excited about at UWinnipeg. “This university is a leader in inclusive and innovative education,” she says. “We have a distinctive role as a downtown anchor, and great potential to build relationships that strengthen our city and province. I look forward to seeing our increased impact over the coming years.”
