To the UWinnipeg community,
With the fall term now in full swing, I want to thank each of you for contributing to such a positive start to the year. Whether you are new or returning to UWinnipeg, we are so glad you are part of our community. Together, we will make this another meaningful year—continuing this university’s rich history of facilitating respectful dialogue, leading innovations, championing rights and inclusion, and working to solve some of our world’s most pressing issues.
At UWinnipeg, we have much to be proud of and excited about as we look to the year ahead.
Here are some highlights:
- With investments in recruitment and marketing, and the strength of faculty who provide students an exceptional learning experience, the University is seeing a 13% increase in new domestic students, along with a 9% increase in Indigenous student enrolment. This strong domestic growth strengthens our foundation as we move forward, helping us thrive despite a reduction in the number of international students caused by federal government policy changes.
- The University was recently gifted $5 million from the Mastercard Foundation for its exemplary work in Indigenous education. This transformative gift will significantly advance Indigenous learning at UWinnipeg. This is especially meaningful as our campus gathers this week for events and activities leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
- With prudent budget management over the past few years, the University has eliminated the $30 million deficit that had been accumulated in previous years—putting us in a strong position to increase our impact going forward.
- Our new PhD in Bioscience and Policy is now fully under way, and we look forward to continuing to expand options for students while building expertise that strengthens our province.
- Our exceptional alumni community continues to make us proud. This year, we are thrilled to celebrate four inspiring alumni at our inaugural Distinguished Alumni Awards Night on October 23.
- This fall the University will launch a new Strategic Plan to better position our community to meet every challenge and opportunity the future holds. Supporting this is our first Strategic Enrolment Management Plan, which will transform how we recruit, admit, support, and retain students.
Simply put, UWinnipeg is thriving and poised to increase its impact in the coming years. I encourage you to continue to be part of the energy on campus. Attend events on campus, cheer at Wesmen games, wear your UWinnipeg hoodies proudly, and continue to bring the passion, dedication, and creativity that make this university a powerful force for good in our city and our province.
Our shared successes are real—and they are only the beginning. Together, let’s make this a year to remember, because when a community rises to meet the moment, UWIN.
