The University of Winnipeg joins the world in mourning the loss of Dr. Jane Goodall, the renowned primatologist, conservationist, and founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, on October 1, 2025.
Dr. Goodall had a special connection with The University of Winnipeg. She visited campus as the Axworthy Distinguished Lecturer in 2015, delivering a public lecture that drew a packed house of 2,500 people to the Duckworth Centre. Her lecture was broadcast as an episode of CBC’s IDEAS radio show, and is still available on the CBC Radio website.
In 2017, Dr. Goodall returned to UWinnipeg for a special convocation ceremony in which she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws, recognizing her lifetime contributions to conservation and global education.
Dr. Goodall’s visits to Winnipeg were important moments that helped strengthen public engagement with conservation and inspired local youth and scholars. Her work here and throughout the world to deepen human understanding of animals left an enduring legacy of research, education, and activism.
The University extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Goodall’s family, colleagues at the Jane Goodall Institute and the many organizations and communities she inspired. Campus flags will be flown at half-mast in her honour on October 6.
