February is Black History Month, and this year’s theme is “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.”

Afro-Caribbean Mentorship Program event at UWinnipeg
This year, UWinnipeg is proud to host the Afro-Caribbean Mentorship Program (ACMP) 2026 Black History Month event, Black Narratives Leading Communities: Action, Vision & Change, along with RRC Polytech, University of Manitoba, and RBC.
This event will celebrate the Black African Diaspora community in Canada and pay homage to the great accomplishments of the Black African Diaspora people throughout history, leading to the present. The event will involve panel discussions, Black business showcases, bursaries for Black African Diaspora students (secondary and post-secondary Winnipeg students), recognition for trailblazers in the Black African Diaspora Winnipeg community, entertainment, and a catered meal.
The event takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. on February 27 in several locations across campus, including Riddell Hall, 3C00, the Bulman Centre, and the Riddell atrium. It features a keynote address by His Excellency, The Honorable Gline Clarke, High Commissioner to Canada from Barbados, at 7 p.m.

Apply for book bursaries
Afro-Caribbean and Black students at UWinnipeg, UManitoba, RRC Polytech and high schools in Winnipeg can apply for up to $3,200 in book bursaries. The deadline to apply is February 13, 2026.

UWSA events
Movie Night: The UWSA Racialized Students Director and the BIPoC Lounge will host several events throughout the month. On February 5 there will be a free movie night for students at The Hive at 5:30 p.m. You choose the movie you want to watch: Sinners; The Color Purple (2023); or Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Job Fair: On February 26 there will be a Job Fair where you can learn about Black-owned businesses in Winnipeg. It takes place in the Bulman Student Centre from 12 to 3 p.m.
Black Excellence Gala: Also on February 26 there will be a Black Excellence Gala in the Bulman Student Centre at 6:30 p.m. This is an evening dedicated to showcasing and celebrating Black excellence across a wide range of fields. The event will feature a dynamic panel highlighting diverse journeys and achievements, with live performances and cultural food. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for others and all are welcome to attend.

UWinnipeg Archives
The University of Winnipeg Archives is presenting “Archiving the Black Canadian Experience”. The exhibition will last from February 2 to April 30, 2026, with a panel discussion planned on February 3, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The panel discussion is called “Archiving the Black Canadian Experience: Education, Innovation, Preservation”. Three speakers will come to discuss their work ensuring that the gaps in our documentary heritage are filled with the stories of Black Community by preserving their cultural heritage and making it accessible to a wider audience. The event is free, open to faculty, staff, students, and community members, and light refreshments will be available.
