The University of Winnipeg joins the Winnipeg community in mourning the loss of Tannis M. Richardson, a beloved philanthropist, community leader, and University of Winnipeg Collegiate alumna.
Through her extensive leadership across health, community, and arts organizations, Tannis had a significant impact on many lives throughout Manitoba. From supporting the advancement of Juvenile Diabetes research, to being instrumental in the creation of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, to volunteering with a variety of local and national organizations, she left a deep and positive legacy in our province. Tannis was widely celebrated and recognized for her work, including being named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2003.
One of the University of Winnipeg’s most prominent buildings, the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, was made possible because of the generosity of the Richardson family. In 2006, the Richardson Foundation provided the lead gift for the building’s construction. As a centre for teaching and research innovation, this facility has had a profound impact on students, faculty, and the wider community.
Tannis Richardson’s legacy is woven throughout the fabric of our city. Her generosity and leadership will continue to have an impact through the lives she touched and the institutions she strengthened.
