WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg congratulates new graduate Shaneen Robinson for a trio of awards she is receiving this week, two of which are national. Robinson, who graduated from UWinnipeg earlier this month with a BA in Communications, is receiving two awards Saturday, June 21, which is National Aboriginal Day.
Governor General Michaëlle Jean will present Robinson with an Aboriginal Youth Role Model Award in Ottawa. Also Saturday, she receives a Manitoba Hydro Spirit of the Earth Award in a ceremony at the Red River Exhibition. On Tuesday, June 19, the Dominion Institute presented Robinson with a cheque for her first place finish in the national Canadian Aboriginal Writing Challenge. Her winning entry was a play she wrote for a University of Winnipeg course titled Notay Kiskintamowin (Wanting to Know) about the 1960’s generation of Aboriginal children who were taken from their parents and adopted into white homes.
“On behalf of the Department of Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications, we are delighted to hear of Shaneen’s tremendous accomplishments,” said Department Chair, Judith Kearns.
In addition to her academic achievements, Robinson works as a host on NCI, Manitoba’s Aboriginal radio network and was recently nominated for the YMCA / YWCA Women of Distinction Awards. She also served on UWinnipeg’s Aboriginal Student Council for several years.
