HONG KONG,CHINA – Further opportunities for students from Huadu, China will be made possible thanks to a second generous gift of $1 million donated by Hopewell Holdings Limited, which was founded by Hong Kong businessman Sir Gordon Wu. Today’s announcement builds on the Wu Chung Scholarship Fund for Chinese students created in 2006 with Hopewell Holdings Limited’s initial $1 million gift. The combined $2 million fund is the largest international scholarship in The University of Winnipeg’s history.
Sir Gordon Wu, Chairman of Hopewell Holdings Ltd., created the Wu Chung Scholarship Fund as a tribute to his father, Wu Chung, who believed in the value of education. Three students from Huadu, in the region of Guangzhou, China are today studying at UWinnipeg as a result of the original gift.
“The leadership of Sir Gordon Wu is not only changing the lives of individual students, it is assisting us in building the foundation of Global College, which reaches out to students around the world and engages them in global issues,” said Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President & Vice-Chancellor of UWinnipeg. “Sir Gordon Wu’s commitment to advancing understanding about the expanding role of China in the world’s economy will have an impact that transcends borders.”
“I am hoping to get a masters degree in economics once I complete my bachelor of science,” said one of the students currently attending UWinnipeg as a Wu Chung Scholar. “Studying abroad has allowed me to become more independent and my horizon has been extended. I get a new perspective on the whole world because I am studying in a developed country. The ways of teaching here fully encourage students to use their intelligence and creativity.” The student’s career goal is to work in the information technology sector in China.
Born in 1935, Sir Gordon Wu left Hong Kong at 17 years old and arrived in Winnipeg as an international student. He eventually attended Princeton University and became an innovative engineer. He has developed projects around the world.
“It is my family’s great privilege to provide ongoing support in nurturing the next generation of leaders through The University of Winnipeg Wu Chung Scholarship Fund,” said Sir Gordon.
The gift is part of The University of Winnipeg’s ‘A World of Opportunity’ Capital Campaign.
“We appreciate Sir Gordon’s commitment to our University and extraordinary generosity which will pay for tuition, books, accommodation, and living expenses for 48 months of study for the Wu Chung international scholars,” said R.M. (Bob) Kozminski, ‘A World of Opportunity’ Campaign Chair.
