WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg’s Institute of Urban Studies will launch the Dr. Earl A. Levin Archive consisting of more than 70 speeches and original articles on a wide range of planning topics, planning reports, extensive newspaper and magazine clippings. The launch takes place with a reception on Mon., Mar. 24, 2008, at 1:00 pm at Menno Simons College, Room 213, Christine McKee Building, 520 Portage Ave.
Dr. Levin has a distinguished and influential career in city planning. As a consultant and visionary public sector planner, Levin was involved in some of Winnipeg’s most important planning processes including Neeginan and the Core Area Initiative.
As head of planning for Metro Winnipeg, Dr. Levin was very involved with a number of important initiatives including the development of the Winnipeg Convention Centre, the implementation of Metropolitan Development Plan, the formulation and implementation of Downtown Plan, the Port-a-Park System, the Railways Relocation Study and the Winnipeg Area Transportation Study.
Dr. Levin has served as the Director of Planning for the Province of Saskatchewan and Director of City Planning for Winnipeg. He was the head of the City Planning program at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba, Senior Fellow at the Institute of Urban Studies at UWinnipeg and the President of the Town Planning Institute of Canada (now the Canadian Institute of Planners).
His archives are a valuable resource and a considerable asset for the Institute of Urban Studies and will be accessible to students, faculty, staff and the public.
Dr. Levin will be available for one-on-one interviews along with UWinnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy at the Mon., Mar. 24 reception.
