WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg is again one of Canada’s top universities for quality of teaching and class sizes, according to a survey of first-year students conducted by Maclean’s magazine and the Canadian Undergraduate Survey Consortium (CUSC).
The Feb. 18 issue – which features UWinnipeg first-year education student Jenna Miller on the cover – includes survey results conducted last fall with 13,000 first-year students nation-wide.
“Academic excellence continues to be a key trait of The University of Winnipeg,” said UWinnipeg President & Vice-Chancellor Lloyd Axworthy. “Once again, our students have clearly stated that factors such as quality of education and class sizes are important and are valued at UWinnipeg. In this survey, UWinnipeg remains one of the best universities in Canada. This is a reflection of the professional and dedication of our professors, instructors and staff who help to build a positive learning environment for our students.”

Quality of Teaching – Overall: 4th; Western Canada: 1st
Access to Professors – Overall: 4th; Western Canada: 1st
Satisfied With Decision to Attend This University – Overall: 6th; Western Canada: 1st
Maclean’s last conducted a similar survey three years ago. UWinnipeg’s ranking increased in three of the four categories, as follows:

Satisfied With Decision To Attend This University: + 3.3%
Class Sizes: + 2.1%
These rankings compare favorably with the Maclean’s results last November when UWinnipeg was ranked 9th overall in Canada among undergraduate universities and with the Globe & Mail 2007 Report Card last October when the University ranked 1st or 2nd in the country in eight student-satisfaction categories. These categories ranged from class sizes and teaching quality to overall quality of education and faculty-student interaction.
The consistent placement of The University of Winnipeg among Canada’s top universities will be further enhanced by new academic programming being developed by the University. UWinnipeg recently announced it will offer new, innovative graduate programs in areas such as Aboriginal Governance, Applied Computer Science & Society, and Bioscience, Technology & Public Policy. A new Faculty of Business & Economics along with a new Thematic Major in Human Rights & Global Studies are other areas of study being added to the University’s programming to further meet student needs and job-market demands.
