WINNIPEG, MB – Margaret Bloodworth – The Government of Canada’s Associate Secretary to the Cabinet, Privy Council Office and National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister – will be honored for her civic achievements with an Honorary Doctor of Laws from The University of Winnipeg at a special convocation ceremony a week today.
“Margaret is a distinguished alumnus, Manitoban and civil servant,” said Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg. “Her level of commitment in serving the nation successfully in her leadership roles in several government departments, over the decades, including her current role as advisor to the Prime Minister in security, is an example of her dedication to public service and her country.”
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Bloodworth graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1970 from UWinnipeg and earned a Bachelor of Law from the University of Ottawa in 1977. She was called to the Bar in 1979.
She has served the Canadian public in many roles, beginning in 1972 as a Compensation Officer with Canada Post. She has remained in government and has quickly moved up in the ranks ever since. Some of her prestigious roles include Deputy Minister of Public Safety, Deputy Minister of National Defense, Deputy Minister of Transport, Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council (Security and Intelligence, and Counsel) and Director General, Dispute Resolution Branch, National Transportation Agency of Canada.
Bloodworth is one of nine people who will receive University of Winnipeg honorary degrees at a special convocation ceremony on Sept. 14, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. in Convocation Hall. She is the seventh individual to be named an honorary doctorate degree recipient. The others are Raymond McFeetors, David Bergen, Honourable Ruth Krindle, Harvey Thorleifson, Dianne Leggatt and John Roberts.
