H. Sanford Riley, Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg and Chair of The University of Winnipeg Foundation, has announced the names of the members of The University of Winnipeg Foundation’s inaugural Board of Directors.

“I am delighted with the high level of support our new Board members bring to the Foundation,” says Riley. “I am very pleased, as well, that we have so many University of Winnipeg, United College, and Collegiate graduates among those who are participating as founding members. With this leadership, the Board will help the Foundation serve a unique and important role as a link between the University and the larger community.”

“The University of Winnipeg has made great strides getting its financial house in order,” says the University’s Board of Regents Chair, Richard Graydon. “The establishment of the Foundation and the appointment of its Board are important factors in the next steps of future development of The University of Winnipeg, helping the University to reach new heights of excellence in education.”

“This is an historic moment and a testament to the generations of faculty, staff, alumni, and donors who have worked, studied, and believed in the mission and vision of United College, The Collegiate, and The University of Winnipeg,” says Patrick Deane, Acting President and Vice-President (Academic). “We are proud to stand alongside distinguished fine members of the Foundation’s inaugural Board.”

“It is a privilege to serve such an outstanding Board whose members show leadership, commitment, and passion for our University,” says Susan A.Thompson, President and C.E.O. of the Foundation, and graduate of both The Collegiate and The University of Winnipeg. “With the Foundation Board in place, we can build great legacies, ensuring that our students can gain abilities and skills that are vital in a world that is changing and complex.”

The University of Winnipeg Foundation is a self-sustaining fundraising institution created to support the mission and the vision of The University of Winnipeg. Once the Foundation becomes fully operational this fall, it will contribute to the University’s financial stability and play a key role in broadening and strengthening community support. The University of Winnipeg Foundation will focus on raising revenue toward student scholarships and bursaries, a capital development campaign, and special projects enhancing University and Collegiate programs, the library, facilities, equipment, and technology.

Exterior restoration of the University’s flagship building Wesley Hall is of the highest priority. Planning on this project is well underway, with completion of the restoration expected in 2006.

The University of Winnipeg, located in the heart of the city, is a caring community dedicated to access and excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Ranked by Maclean’s magazine as one of Canada’s top four undergraduate universities, The University of Winnipeg is home to more than 8,000 students annually.
