It has been ten years since the loss of one million lives in the Rwandan Genocide. To commemorate each life lost, The University of Winnipeg, in partnership with the Liu Institute for Global Issues, A.V. Mauro Centre for Peace & Justice, Menno Simons College, the Winnipeg Rwandan Community, International African Child Relief, and the Karisimbi Cultural Group, will host a number of events to Remember Rwanda.

The public is invited to attend “Responsibility to Protect” Discussion Forum at The University of Winnipeg on Tuesday, April 13 from 7:00 p.m.-9 p.m. in Duckworth Centre (Spence at Ellice).

  • “Through The Eyes of A Child” with Christian Butera
  • “Viewer Discretion is Advised” performance with Armand Kajangwe
  • Panel Discussion with:
    • Madame Esther Mujawayo, genocide survivor and author of SurVivante
    • Ret. General Guy Tousignant, former Force Commander & Assistant Secretary-General for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda
    • Liu Institute Director Dr. Lloyd Axworthy
  • Q & A with Audience
  • Reception

Mr. Axworthy, who will be speaking at the UN on the 10th Anniversary of the Genocide, said, “This commemoration is a time for all of us to reflect on the responsibility to protect civilians and what we, as Canadians, can and should do to ensure the protection of humanity.”

The public is also welcome to attend “Remember Rwanda,” an art exhibit in the Hamilton Galleria and University Archives (both spaces are located in The University of Winnipeg Library in Centennial Hall). The Opening Reception takes place on Thursday, April 22, 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. The exhibit continues until May 21.

Organized in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, the “Remember Rwanda” exhibition includes photographs, paintings, prints and sculpture by Winnipeg artists Karen Cornelius, Agatha Doerksen, and Alison Doerksen.

These events are part of the Remembering Rwanda 10th Anniversary Memorial Project, a global initiative to commemorate the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, raise international awareness and recognition, and document and educate in order to preserve the memory of the victims and those who tried to assist them.
