A First in Manitoba – Tackling Computer Hackers

Tackling Computer HackersWINNIPEG, MB – Winnipeg student Nicole Lamoureux is enrolled in a high demand field aimed at limiting cyber attacks. As computer hackers gain access to our networks and data containing sensitive personal information, the corporate world is increasingly searching for skilled network security specialists who can combat these attacks.

Now, in a first for Manitoba, a full time Network Security Diploma program will begin in September, offered jointly by The University of Winnipeg Professional, Applied and Continuing Education and Winnipeg Technical College (WTC).

It means 19 year-old Lamoureux can fulfill her dream of becoming a security specialist. “My father is a techie and so I’ve always loved computers,” says Lamoureux. “What I especially like about this diploma is the work placement that is part of the program and the extras, like help with resume writing.” Lamoureux says she eventually would like to be an independent security specialist consultant.

Students have access to state-of-the art CISCO Labs at WTC. While working towards their diploma, students are also prepped to write industry certifications such as CISCO CCNA, Microsoft MCITPCISCO CCNA Security, C CISCO CCNA Voice and Ethical Hacking. In addition to the Diploma graduates will also receive UWinnipeg’s Management Certificate and Information Assurance and Security Certificate.

Randy Hirose is an instructor who teaches CISCO courses and Ethical Hacking. “In the hacking world, there are good guys and bad guys,” says Hirose. “We hack for the right reasons, to secure information. We give our students tools, so they can learn to defend against attacks including how to secure wireless networks.” Hirose says every company, from insurance to banking to small firms, need a security specialist on staff or contract to make sure they are protected.

This one year diploma program is unique in that it blends hands-on-learning with theory. Graduates receive in-depth knowledge of and training in various protocols, network standards, designs and security solutions. Robert Half Technology 2012 singled out the role of data security analyst as an in-demand profession.

The Network Security Diploma program is 12 months full time and begins in September 2012.
