A Straight Arrow to Beijing

UWinnipeg student selected for Canadian Olympic Team

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg congratulates third-year student Jay Lyon, who has secured a place on the elite Canadian Olympic Team for Archery and heads to Beijing this summer.

Lyon earned his spot at a closely contested trial this past weekend that ended Monday June 2 in Scarborough, ON. The three-day event culled 14 starters to only four by the final round. It is an especially impressive feat because Lyon has only spent five years participating in archery events.

“I am pretty excited about it,” explained Lyon. “But is hasn’t fully clicked in yet. I will also be heading to Boe, France in two weeks for the fourth stage World Cup Competition. This will be like a Beijing tune-up and will help get me ready for the Olympics.”

Lyon only picked up the sport five years ago to achieve his goal to make the 2008 Canadian Olympic Team. He also participated as part of the Canadian men’s team that made a strong showing at the 2007 World Archery Championships in Leipzig, Germany. Canada has not qualified a full, three-man team since the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

When he isn’t at target practice, Lyon is working towards a degree in Kinesiology at UWinnipeg.
