Academic Freedom: Dr. Nancy Olivieri Speaks Out / Jazz Concert – add4

The University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA) and the University of Winnipeg Faculty Association present: “When Academic Freedom and Corporate Interests Collide,” a public lecture by Dr. Nancy Olivieri.

Olivieri is widely recognized as one of the pre-eminent crusaders for academic freedom since Apotex, the corporate sponsor of her clinical trials of its drug, attempted to suppress her findings of unexpected risks.

The company abruptly terminated the trials and issued warnings of legal action against Olivieri should she inform her patients at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children of the risks, or publish her findings.

Despite these warnings, Olivieri published her findings in the New England Journal of Medicine and was subsequently dismissed from her position as Director of the HSC Program of Haemoglobinopathy. After more than seven years of legal battle, an independent inquiry into the matter concluded that neither the university nor the hospital offered her appropriate support in her conflict with Apotex.

This event is part of an undergraduate student colloquia hosted by the UWSA. The lecture is free and all are welcome to attend.
